At every stage, simple aftercare, not touching the jewellery and a check-up appointment are the most important steps.

The first 48 hours

Mild redness, swelling and tenderness are normal. Don't touch the piercing, pick the crust or over-clean. Follow the aftercare instructions your piercer gave you.

Weeks 1–2

Lymph fluid and crust may be seen. Clean gently with saline. Avoid pressure while sleeping and in daily life.

Weeks 3–6

Swelling decreases noticeably. The jewellery may feel loose or long; this is the time for a check-up. Your piercer may recommend shortening the jewellery (downsizing).

Months 2–3

In fast-healing spots such as the lobe and septum, tenderness decreases considerably. Cartilage spots are still healing; don't change jewellery early.

Month 6 and beyond

Spots such as cartilage and the navel can take 6–12 months. Even if it looks healed from the outside, have it checked before changing jewellery.

Reminder

Everyone's process is different. If swelling is increasing, pain is getting worse or discharge smells, consult your piercer or doctor regardless of the stage.

How to use the weekly timeline

The timeline is for seeing the general flow of the process; your personal situation may differ. Week numbers show the stages of healing, and the intensity of aftercare decreases over time.

Weeks 1–2: swelling, tenderness and lymph may be seen; saline and careful protection.

Weeks 3–6: symptoms decrease; keep protecting the jewellery and avoiding pressure.

Months 2–3: healing may be complete in spots such as the lobe and nose; it continues in cartilage.

Months 3–12: cartilage and difficult spots settle; check-up for jewellery change.

Moving between stages

When moving from one stage to the next, if the swelling has gone down and the jewellery turns easily, shortening may be needed. The first jewellery is usually chosen long; once the swelling goes down, the end of the jewellery can dig into the skin and downsizing is needed. This decision should be made with a check by your piercer.

Deviations from the timeline

Healing may not progress in a straight line. One week may go well and the next bring irritation; this is usually after trauma or pressure. Don't panic: find the cause, remove the pressure and simplify your aftercare. If symptoms don't decrease within a few days, get expert support.

Weeks 1–2: the core period

The first two weeks are when swelling and tenderness peak. Apply saline twice a day, gently pat dry with dry paper and avoid pressure. Don't twist, remove or change the jewellery. Adjust your sleeping position and make sure hair and clothes don't catch on the jewellery.

Weeks 3–8: the settling period

As the swelling decreases, the piercing begins to stabilise. Feeling good at this stage shouldn't make you drop your aftercare discipline; keep up your saline routine and go to your piercer for the first check-up. If the jewellery feels long, it may be time for downsizing. In soft tissue, healing is usually largely complete at this point; in cartilage, you are still at the start of the journey.

Months 3–12 and beyond: maturing

For cartilage spots, shortening the jewellery and then switching to rings or different jewellery is planned. This is a period of patience: a piercing that looks healed from the outside continues to mature inside. Very tight headphones, heavy jewellery or heavy friction can cause small setbacks. If you have setbacks, return to your saline routine and find and remove the cause.

Personalise the timeline

Set the timeline as phone reminders: saline times, check-up and downsizing date. Note the change around the piercing every week; taking photos makes it easier to see progress and gives you information to show your piercer.

Common mistakes

Stopping aftercare because it looks fine

Skipping the check-up appointment

This article is for general information and is not a substitute for medical advice.
