Externally threaded jewellery is not recommended for fresh piercings, because the thread can rub the tissue as it passes through the hole.

Internally threaded

The threads are inside the bar, at the end. The bar is smooth. It is considered safe for a new piercing.

Threadless (push-pin)

A pin system where the end is fitted by pressing it into the bar. You bend the pin slightly and insert it, and it holds by itself. It is light and very common in cartilage spots.

Externally threaded

The threads are on the outside of the bar. They can rub the tissue as they pass through the hole and can cause irritation even in a healed piercing. That is why the APP recommends internally threaded or threadless jewellery for fresh piercings.

Which should you choose?

Internally threaded or threadless for a new piercing. The advantage of threadless is that tightness is adjusted by the bend of the pin; the advantage of internally threaded is how widely available it is.

Fitting tip

When inserting or removing jewellery, hold it steady with one hand and turn the end with the other. Don't over-tighten; you could damage the thread inside the bar.

Three types of connection

The end of the jewellery attaches to the body in different ways:

Internally threaded: because the threads are inside the body, the part that passes through the hole is smooth; it is preferred according to APP standards.

Threadless (press-fit): the end is fitted by pressing it into the body; it has no thread and is usually even more comfortable than internally threaded.

Externally threaded: the threads are on the outside of the body; they can rub and irritate the tissue as they pass through the hole and are not suitable for a new piercing.

Which is better?

Internally threaded or threadless jewellery is recommended for a new piercing. Externally threaded jewellery causes irritation. With threadless jewellery, the pin must be bent correctly; your piercer adjusts the jewellery.

Take care when fitting

If you change jewellery yourself in a healed piercing, wash your hands and tighten the jewellery in the right direction. In a new piercing, let your piercer change the jewellery.

How do the three connection types work?

In externally threaded jewellery, the thread is on the outside of the bar and the end screws on. In internally threaded jewellery, the thread is inside the end and the bar is smooth. Threadless jewellery has a pin mechanism that holds the end by pressing it into the bar; there is no thread. Each system has its advantages and disadvantages.

The risk of external threading

When externally threaded jewellery is screwed in, the threads pass through the hole and can irritate the tissue. In cheap production the thread can be rough. That is why externally threaded jewellery is not recommended during healing and should be used carefully even in a healed piercing.

Internally threaded and threadless: why do they make healing easier?

A smooth bar does not damage the piercing. With threadless jewellery, changing the end is easy; you can change the end while the bar stays in, and it gives a fine, elegant look. With internally threaded jewellery, the ends do not create roughness as they pass through either. Both are reliable when made of implant-grade material.

Which one to choose?

For aftercare, quality and ease of use, choose threadless or internally threaded jewellery. You can ask your piercer for a quick lesson to understand the mechanism, such as tightening or loosening the end, and to fit it correctly. Making sure the jewellery is held firmly reduces the risk of losing it.

Tightening jewellery and not losing it

A threadless end must be pressed into the bar firmly at the right angle. With an internally threaded end, the direction of turning and tightness matter. A loose end can get lost and the bar can damage the piercing. Checking the tightness of your jewellery every month is a good habit. Hands should be clean and the bar dry when fitting the end.

Changing jewellery with your piercer

At your first jewellery change, watching your piercer fit the end in the right direction and with the right tightness is a good learning opportunity. If you are going to change the jewellery yourself, clean hands, a clean surface and good light are essential. Keep small parts in an open container, not over the sink.

Common mistakes

Wearing cheap externally threaded jewellery

Bending the pin too much

This article is for general information and is not a substitute for medical advice.
