How to insert and remove piercing jewelry: insertion guide
Don't change jewelry in a fresh piercing yourself: let your piercer do the first change and the downsizing. When changing jewelry in a healed piercing, follow these steps.
- Wash your hands: with soap and water, then dry with a disposable paper towel.
- Prepare the jewelry: take it out of its clean packaging and don't let it touch anything else.
- Be slow and gentle: guide the jewelry along the direction of the piercing without forcing it. Stop if you feel resistance, pain or see bleeding.
- Internally threaded end: hold the bar steady with your other hand and turn the end; don't overtighten.
- Push-pin end: bend the pin slightly, insert it into the bar and keep it straight.
- Hoops and segments: pass the hoop through the piercing and close the hinge or bead; make sure it is fully closed.
When should you get professional help?
If the jewelry won't come out, or the piercing is red, swollen, hot or discharging, or you feel feverish, don't try to remove the jewelry yourself. If you see signs of infection, consult a doctor before removing the jewelry and let our studio know.
