Short answer: The conch is the cartilage in the inner bowl of the ear. Healing takes 6–12 months. A stud is worn, or a ring once healed; thanks to its wide surface it suits eye-catching jewellery.

What is a conch?

It is the wide cartilage area in the middle of the ear bowl. It is divided into the inner conch and the outer conch.

Pain and procedure

Because the cartilage is thick, the pressure is clearly felt; the procedure is quick.

Healing time

About 6–12 months. Pressure while sleeping and headphones prolong it.

Which jewellery?

It starts with a flatback labret or a straight bar. After healing, rings or large gem bars can be worn.

Aftercare tips

Avoid pressure from your pillow, keep hairspray and make-up away.

Who is it suitable for?

People who are patient and ready for a long healing time.

Conch anatomy and suitability

The conch is the inner cartilage area of the ear; it is divided into the inner conch and outer conch. Its wide area makes it suitable for eye-catching jewellery.

Before piercing, the piercer looks at the anatomy of the ear or area. Everyone's anatomy is different; some people may not have a suitable structure for the desired spot. In that case, the piercer suggests a safe alternative.

Advantages and things to watch for with a conch piercing

Pros:

  • Carries large, statement jewellery.
  • Highlights the shape of the ear.

Things to watch:

  • Healing can take 6–12 months.
  • Sensitive to pressure while sleeping.

Daily life while your conch heals

For patient people ready for a cartilage piercing.

During healing, do gentle saline aftercare and do not remove or change the jewellery. Watch out for factors such as pressure, hair, headphones and phones; consult your piercer if you see signs of irritation.

Before deciding on a conch piercing

Sleeping position is important with conch piercings. Choosing the right jewellery length and reducing pressure while sleeping speeds up healing.

With a free consultation before your appointment, we can assess your anatomy together and finalise the jewellery and size plan on the spot.

Inner conch vs outer conch

An inner conch goes through the wide cartilage area in the middle of the ear bowl; an outer conch is a spot near the upper edge of the bowl and accentuates the side profile of the ear more. In both options the cartilage is thick, so noticeable pressure is felt during the procedure, but it is very quick. If your anatomy is not suitable (such as a very shallow bowl), the piercer may direct you to a less risky spot.

Choosing jewellery for a conch

At first, a flatback labret is the most comfortable option; the back plate lies flat against the ear and causes fewer problems on the pillow. Thanks to its large surface, a conch looks great with gem or designer bars. After healing is complete, hoops or large-diameter jewellery can also be worn. With a hoop, the diameter should be chosen according to the shape of the ear; a hoop that is too small squeezes the tissue. Titanium's lightness also gives comfort with large conch jewellery.

Sleep, hair and headphones

The conch is a wide, prominent area; pressure from pillows and headphones lands directly on it. Using a travel pillow, sleeping on your back or the other side, and putting aside on-ear headphones speed up healing. Hairspray, gel and make-up can cause irritation if they get on the piercing; cover the jewellery or avoid it when washing your face and styling your hair.

What to expect during healing

A conch settles in 6–12 months for most people. Swelling, tenderness and occasional discharge in the first months are normal. Healing does not follow a straight line; short periods of irritation can be temporary. Regular saline, avoiding pressure and the right jewellery length are the three main factors for success. Once the swelling goes down, the jewellery is shortened if necessary. If a bump or persistent discharge develops, talk to your piercer.

Common mistakes

  • Changing the jewellery too early
  • Lying on it and putting pressure on it
  • Leaving the long bar without downsizing
