Short answer: The daith is the thick cartilage in the inner fold of the ear. Healing takes 6–12 months; it is popular with ring jewellery. There is no scientific evidence for health claims (migraine, etc.).

What is a daith?

It is the inner cartilage fold close to the entrance of the ear. The shape of the fold determines suitability.

Pain and procedure

Because it goes through thick cartilage, the pressure is noticeable.

Healing time

About 6–12 months; it takes patience.

Which jewellery?

The first jewellery should be a straight bar or the type your piercer recommends; a ring is worn once healed.

Aftercare tips

Don't sleep on it; protect it from friction from hair and headphones.

Who is it suitable for?

People with suitable ear anatomy who can stick to an aftercare routine. Getting a piercing for health claims such as treating migraines is not recommended.

Daith anatomy and suitability

The daith is in the inner cartilage fold of the ear. The anatomy must be suitable; it may not be possible with every ear shape.

Before piercing, the piercer looks at the anatomy of the ear or area. Everyone's anatomy is different; some people may not have a suitable structure for the desired spot. In that case, the piercer suggests a safe alternative.

Advantages and things to watch for with a daith piercing

Pros:

  • Gives an elegant, distinctive look.
  • Very stylish with ring jewellery.

Things to watch:

  • Healing can take 6–12 months.
  • Suitable anatomy is critical.

Daily life while your daith heals

For people with suitable anatomy and patience.

During healing, do gentle saline aftercare and do not remove or change the jewellery. Watch out for factors such as pressure, hair, headphones and phones; consult your piercer if you see signs of irritation.

Before deciding on a daith piercing

There is no strong scientific evidence supporting health claims about the daith (e.g. migraine); the piercing should be considered for aesthetic purposes only, and a doctor should be consulted for health concerns.

With a free consultation before your appointment, we can assess your anatomy together and finalise the jewellery and size plan on the spot.

Where is the daith and how is it done?

The daith passes through the innermost cartilage fold, close to the entrance of the ear canal. The cartilage layer is thick and curved, so the procedure requires a curved needle and the right angle. Not every ear is suitable for a daith; the fold must be pronounced enough. The piercer first examines your ear and tells you honestly if it is not suitable. It is worn with a ring, but the first jewellery is usually a curved bar or a special ring.

About the migraine claim

The daith became famous for the claim that it reduces migraine pain. This claim is based on acupuncture points, but it has not been sufficiently proven scientifically. A piercing is not a substitute for migraine treatment. If you have migraines, consult your doctor first. It is best to think of the daith as an aesthetic choice. Pain may change for some people and have no effect at all for others.

Healing and aftercare

A daith settles in 6–12 months, sometimes longer. Because it is inside the ear, it is a moist, airless environment; keep it away from hair products, headphones and cotton buds. Be careful not to get water in your ear in the shower, then pat dry with clean paper. Clean with saline twice a day. Pressure can lead to irritation bumps and prolonged discharge.

Jewellery and size

The first jewellery is usually a straight bar or a curved barbell. A ring is worn after the piercing has settled; its diameter should suit the shape of your ear. A tight ring squeezes the cartilage, while a wide ring moves and irritates. Titanium is a good choice because it is lightweight and has a low allergy risk.

Daith FAQs

Changing jewellery in a daith can be difficult because the inside of the ear is narrow and curved. It is therefore a good idea to have your first jewellery change and switch to a ring done by your piercer. Even after the piercing has settled, closing the ends of rings properly takes practice.

Common mistakes

  • Changing the jewellery too early
  • Lying on it and putting pressure on it
  • Leaving the long bar without downsizing
