What is a helix?
It is the cartilage in the upper fold of the ear. It can be done as a single, double or triple placement.
Pain and procedure
Because it goes through cartilage, the pressure is more noticeable than in the lobe; the procedure is very quick.
Healing time
Genellikle 6–12 ay sürer; bazı kişilerde daha uzun sürebilir. Yan yatma ve kulaklık baskısı süreyi uzatır.
Which jewellery?
A straight bar (labret) in implant titanium. The first jewellery is chosen long for swelling and shortened once healed.
Aftercare tips
Don't sleep on it; use a travel pillow. Avoid pressure from hats and headphones. Rinse with saline and don't pick the crust.
Who is it suitable for?
People who want to try a cartilage piercing and can stick to an aftercare routine.
Helix anatomy and suitability
The helix is the cartilage area in the upper outer fold of the ear. It can be planned as a single, double or triple.
Before piercing, the piercer looks at the anatomy of the ear or area. Everyone's anatomy is different; some people may not have a suitable structure for the desired spot. In that case, the piercer suggests a safe alternative.
Advantages and things to watch for with a helix piercing
Pros:
- An elegant, understated look.
- Great for stacking.
Things to watch:
- Kıkırdak olduğu için iyileşme uzundur (genellikle 6–12 ay).
- Side sleeping and headphone pressure cause problems.
Daily life while your helix heals
Suitable for anyone ready for a cartilage piercing who can be patient.
During healing, do gentle saline aftercare and do not remove or change the jewellery. Watch out for factors such as pressure, hair, headphones and phones; consult your piercer if you see signs of irritation.
Before deciding on a helix piercing
The main rule during helix healing is not to remove the jewellery and to avoid pressure. Be careful with the jewellery when brushing your hair and taking off hats.

Where is a helix done and what types are there?
The helix is the cartilage running along the fold at the upper outer edge of the ear. Because cartilage thickness varies from person to person, the piercer decides the spot according to your anatomy. A single helix is the most common start; later, a second or third piercing can be added along the same line to create a “double helix” or “triple helix” look. It is possible to do them on the same day, but because cartilage healing is tiring, most people leave a few months in between.
Why does cartilage take so long to heal?
Cartilage has few blood vessels. Because the tissue gets less oxygen and nutrients than soft tissue, closing and maturing progress slowly. That is why a helix keeps settling inside for months even if it looks fine from the outside. Swelling, mild soreness and occasional clear-whitish discharge are expected in the first weeks. The process is not linear: after a good week, a small knock can cause irritation. In that case, there is no need to panic; finding the cause of the pressure and sticking to your aftercare is enough.
Sleep, hair, headphones: practical solutions
Sleeping on your ear is the most common cause of helix irritation. Using a travel pillow with a hole in the middle to rest your ear in, or sleeping on your back or the other side, helps. Be careful with the jewellery when tying up and brushing your hair; when long hair wraps around the jewellery and pulls, the piercing gets irritated. Temporarily use in-ear headphones or a speaker instead of on-ear headphones. Not holding the phone against the pierced ear is just as important.
When can you switch to a ring?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions. Because a ring moves constantly compared to a bar, it increases irritation in an unhealed helix. It is safest to continue with a straight bar (labret) until the piercing has fully settled and the swelling and tenderness are gone. Have a check with your piercer before switching to a ring; the jewellery thickness and diameter are chosen according to the shape of your ear. The initial bar is worn long and shortened once the swelling goes down (downsizing); if this step is skipped, the long bar strains the piercing with every movement.
Common mistakes
- Changing the jewellery too early
- Lying on it and putting pressure on it
- Leaving the long bar without downsizing
