Is silver jewellery suitable for a fresh piercing? Why is it not recommended?
Why is it not suitable?
Silver reacts with air and sweat and tarnishes. This oxide layer can come into contact with the fresh wound and cause irritation and staining of the skin.
The alloy problem
Sterling silver consists of 92.5% silver and other metals; these metals sometimes include nickel and can cause a reaction in sensitive skin.
APP standard
The Association of Professional Piercers accepts materials such as titanium, niobium, implant steel and solid gold for initial jewellery. Silver is not on this list.
When can it be worn?
It can be worn briefly in a fully healed piercing. If you experience irritation with continued wear, go back to titanium or gold.
Alternatives
For a silver look, you can choose titanium and steel jewellery in grey tones.
Why is silver not recommended?
Silver is not suitable for a new piercing. It oxidises and tarnishes when it comes into contact with body fluids, which can cause a grey-black mark (argyria) in the tissue and irritation. Sterling silver may also contain added metals.
In a healed piercing?
Short-term wear of silver jewellery is possible in a healed piercing, but the risk of allergy and oxidation remains. For long-term wear, titanium or gold is safer.
Alternatives
If you want a silver look, choose matte or polished grey titanium; it is advantageous in terms of cost and safety.
Why is silver not recommended for a fresh piercing?
Silver (925) is a soft metal and tarnishes and oxidises when it comes into contact with body fluids. The oxide layer can lead to irritation and grey-black staining of the skin (argyria-like discolouration) in sensitive people. Considering that a fresh piercing is an open wound, this risk is unnecessary. Copper or nickel in the alloy is an additional risk.
When can silver be worn?
If the piercing has fully healed and you are not sensitive to silver, you can try the jewellery for everyday wear. Still, if you notice irritation after wearing it for a long time, switch to titanium or gold. Don't use harsh abrasives to clean tarnished silver jewellery; use a soft cloth and a silver polishing cloth.
Safe alternatives
Implant-grade titanium, niobium and nickel-free solid gold are preferred for fresh piercings. These materials may be more expensive than silver, but they are the right investment. If you love the look of silver, titanium's natural grey tone offers a similar simplicity.
Checklist when buying silver jewellery
Is there a hallmark (925)? Is it plated or solid silver? Is the surface smooth? Is it designed for piercings? Even in a healed piercing, choosing quality silver reduces the risk of irritation. Check the seller's return and refund policy.
Caring for silver jewellery
If you wear silver in a healed piercing, clean the jewellery regularly. Tarnishing speeds up with sweat and perfume. Wiping with a soft cloth and storing it in a dry box extends its life. Avoid contact with silver jewellery in the shower, pool and sea; chlorine and salt damage the surface. If your skin becomes irritated, remove the jewellery and switch to titanium.
Silver and skin sensitivity
In some people, silver can cause grey-blue staining of the skin; this is not irritation but is related to the oxidation of the metal. If tarnishing is widespread or there is itching and redness, stop wearing the jewellery. For those with sensitive skin, eczema or a history of allergies, titanium, niobium or nickel-free gold is a gentler choice. Wear silver only in healed, trouble-free piercings and for short periods; don't wear it while sleeping or exercising.
