What is a rook?
It is the thick cartilage area at the top of the antihelix fold.
Pain and procedure
Because it is a thick, narrow area, the procedure is delicate; the pressure is noticeable.
Healing time
About 6–12 months.
Which jewellery?
A curved or straight bar suited to the fold is chosen by the piercer.
Aftercare tips
Make sure the area around the jewellery stays clean and free of pressure.
Who is it suitable for?
People with suitable anatomy who are ready for a long healing time.
Rook anatomy and suitability
The rook is the thick cartilage ridge in the upper inner fold of the ear. Because it is a narrow area, suitable anatomy is required.
Before piercing, the piercer looks at the anatomy of the ear or area. Everyone's anatomy is different; some people may not have a suitable structure for the desired spot. In that case, the piercer suggests a safe alternative.
Advantages and things to watch for with a rook piercing
Pros:
- An original, eye-catching spot.
- Curved jewellery suits it very well.
Things to watch:
- Healing can take 6–12 months.
- Because it is a narrow area, it is prone to irritation.
Daily life while your rook heals
For people with suitable anatomy and patience.
During healing, do gentle saline aftercare and do not remove or change the jewellery. Watch out for factors such as pressure, hair, headphones and phones; consult your piercer if you see signs of irritation.
Before deciding on a rook piercing
Pressure and sleeping position are important with rook piercings. Choosing curved or correctly sized bar jewellery makes healing easier.
With a free consultation before your appointment, we can assess your anatomy together and finalise the jewellery and size plan on the spot.
Rook anatomy and suitability
The rook passes through the thick cartilage ridge in the upper inner fold of the ear. This ridge is not pronounced enough in everyone; it can be too shallow or too thin. The piercer pinches the tissue between two fingers to assess its thickness. If it is not suitable, they suggest another spot. The rook sits next to the helix and daith in the same area; it is a lovely addition to a stack.
Pain and procedure
Because the cartilage is thick and curved, the pressure is noticeable, but the procedure is very quick. The jewellery is inserted as a curved bar; a straight bar can strain the tissue. Breathing deeply and relaxing during the procedure helps. After the procedure, swelling, throbbing and tenderness may last a few days.
The healing process and challenges
A rook heals in 6–12 months and is often one of the most stubborn cartilage spots. Aftercare is difficult because of the narrow, curved area; saline spray may struggle to reach it. So try positions that make it easier to pat the area around the jewellery dry with clean paper. Watch out for pressure and your sleeping position.
Choosing jewellery
Suitable jewellery style for a rook
Because of the rook's curved shape, a straight bar can squeeze the tissue; a curved bar or a slightly angled labret is more comfortable. A gem end should be small and flat; a large end rubs against the fold of the ear. After healing, different looks can be tried with small rings or designer pieces.
Check-up and jewellery change after a rook piercing
The first check-up is usually done after 4–6 weeks. The piercer may recommend shortening the bar depending on swelling. Changing jewellery yourself in a rook is difficult; have the first change done at the studio. Once the piercing has fully settled, you can switch to a ring or different jewellery.
Common mistakes
- Changing the jewellery too early
- Lying on it and putting pressure on it
- Leaving the long bar without downsizing
